Who is Rev For?

Anyone from any country can apply as long as you are able to open a Paypal account to be paid. You will need to take a screening test and once accept it will be time to set a work schedule.

If you can convert a spoken English audio file into a written document, add captions to videos or movies, or translate documents into another language then this can be for you. (and written chunks of text at the appropriate time slots.)

All you will need is a laptop, computer, or desktop, with working speakers or headset and internet connection.  You need a good knowledge of English and it will be an advantage if you are a fast and above all accurate typer.

The audio files or videos may be hard to understand, so you have to listen to them several times before you understand the right words.

How Much Does Rev Pay?

The amount you get paid depends on the type of work you choose. There are three choices of work which will pay you the amount below:

  • Transcriptionist – $.30 to $1.10 per audio video minute
  • Captioner — $0.54 to $1.10 per audio video minute
  • Translator-Subtitler – $1.50 – $3.00 per video minute

  • A Transcriptionist needs to listen to video or audio and accurately type what is being said.
  • A Captioner has to watch videos, type up dialogue, convey sounds, and sync types of audio with video.
  • If you know a foreign language, you can translate and subtitle which pays higher.

Rev pay every week through Paypal for the previous week’s work done.

How Much Can You Earn working at Rev?

This really depends on how fast you can work.  If you look at the rates given above, you can earn between $18 to $60 dollars for every one hour or 60 minutes of an audio-video minute.

Keep in mind that you have to spend longer typing up and syncing the transcription so it really depends on how fast you work.

If you go on the Rev website, they explain that usually, it takes a person an average of one hour to transcribe 15 minutes of clear audio so you will probably need four hours of actual work to complete transcribing 60 minutes of audio to earn at least $18.

A Professional transcriptionist can transcribe one hour of audio in 2 hours maybe 2 1/2 hours max.  We all know that people with no skills can take 4 hours to maybe more, like every other job, there’s a learning process and with the time you’ll get some experience to do it in 2 or fewer hours who know!

This is like any other job when you have no skills or knowledge, for the job there will be a learning process, and obviously, you’ll be putting in more than 3 to 4 hours to do a transcription audio test.

Negative Things about Rev!

Many Revvers complain because even if they work 40+ hours a week, their earnings will not be enough to sustain a family.

In 2019, Rev made headlines when they announced that it was dropping its minimum pay to $0.30 from $0.45, giving the excuse that this move was done to enable them to pay higher for more difficult videos.

The Revvers took this announcement very badly!

Confusion from Revvers

Revvers have complained about the company’s unfair grating system where you can be kicked or penalized by the platform for supposed mistakes that you cannot question or contest.

They said that most videos have unclear audio and this is what’s making them work longer hours.

There are also accounts of Rev graders who have varying quality control measures so Revvers become confused about the right protocols to follow.

Apparently, there is not enough job for everyone and you have to be really fast to claim a job.

According to some Reverses, there are many videos on the platform that contains disturbing content.

There are reportedly sound recordings and videos that have graphic descriptions of sexual assault, physical and verbal abuse, violence, transphobic dialogues, and more.

A Revver admits to being emotionally disturbed after transcribing a recording of someone talking about abuse and assault.

The Revvers said they didn’t get any warning about the nature of the audio or video and most of the files are almost all labeled incorrectly. In most cases, half the job is partly finished when they realize what they are dealing with.

How can you apply at Rev.com, As a Freelancer(Revvers)?

Rev gives people the freedom to work from home, and if you want to become a Revver, you can decide when and where to work.

To apply at Rev you need to pass a grammar test and complete a sample audio file you need to transcribe using the Rev transcription software.  You don’t need to send a resume, you just need to provide your name and your email.

If you fail the test, you can re-apply after 45 days. There is no resume to present or no job interviews.  If you are a beginner and you have not done any transcription in your life, it’s going to be very hard to earn $1,000 dollars on month one as you’re more likely to earn just $100 or even less depending on your accuracy.

What about the skills?

Many people become frustrated with Rev, because of the misconception that it’s an easy way to make money.  Readers or people who may not really have decent grammar, typing skills, and English skills get attracted without really understanding what the job involves.

  • Excellent understanding of the English language including grammar, spelling, vocabulary, capitalization, and punctuation.
  • Good concentration and focus
  • Sharp listening skills and a good grasp of different accents
  • Fast typing skills, (if you type with two fingers, then find another job.)
  • wide general knowledge of different topics and subject matter so you’ll be familiar with industry-specific words.

Is Rev a Scam or a legit product?

Rev is a Legit Company, and the cost to join Rev is Zero.   If your only option is to work from home and your skills match those required to become a successful transcriptionist, then it can be a good idea to try your luck here at  Rev.

It’s all up to you to decide how much or how little work you want to do.

  1. Hi Lyne,

Thanks for your review of Rev.

I’m pleased that you’ve pointed out a few things here, so as to ensure that people know what they’re getting themselves into.

Audio and video transcription is a huge area online nowadays, so I certainly know that a company like Rev will have plenty of work for the “right people”.

However, as you’ve quite rightly pointed out, this isn’t a way to “make a million”, but you can certainly use your skills to earn a side income.

In truth, I would say that this is a good way to dip your toe into the water and discover what’s available in terms of earning money online, but it’s definitely not a get-rich-quick-scheme.

I find it slightly worrying that transcribers won’t know what work they will be receiving, and it was terrible to read about some of the more “adult”, shall we call them, audio and video transcripts that some have had to work with.

However, based on your review, I can see that Rev is a legitimate company, and as I say, this may be the ideal way for some to begin their online journey.

    1. Hi Partha, Yes Rev is legit but still if your newbie on the internet you will work more hours than people who are expert who they can do it in less than 2 hours. If you can transcribe all in less than 2 hours you will do great but more than that it would be a lot of work for the pay they’ll get.

My daughter applies with Rev, she did the test and succeeded. She applies 3 weeks ago, she’s accepted but she didn’t receive any work yet, she just received an email that says’s ” we do have your name, you’ll receive work very soon” she receives that every week since she apple.

So you’re right saying that it’s not a get rich fast, and I would say it’s good for “extra income” or just “part-time income” for moms at the home or students who want get a little more money every week.

      Thank you for your comment

  2. When I had a company together with my son we used a transcription service several times to get the spoken text of videos in writing. I had the impression they were able to use software, because they were soooo quick. Sometimes we had the texts within an hour.

So maybe that would make the job of a Revver easier as well? If they can use a program, it can accelerate their speed.

    1. I wouldn’t have thought they could make a text-video so fast. My daughter applied to Rev, she passed the tests they give people they want to work for them. It’s been 4 weeks now and she hasn’t received anything since. Well, this is great…
      Thank you

  3. Thank you so much for this incredibly insightful article, Lyne! As a member of the legal field, Rev.com’s services remind me of using a Dictaphone (where we listen to an audio file and type what we hear into a Word and/or PDF document). I love to type, and I feel that this type of service is a great way to improve one’s typing speed and accuracy. If you’re looking for a paying, work from home position, Rev.com is certainly an option! God bless you!

    1. Hello, Yes Rev.com is a good online job to apply for. Oh, I remember those “Dictaphone” but it was not with Word of PDF me, I used to work on an electric typewriter. In my early years of work, we had an old typewriter and change it to an electric typewriter and dictaphone. Now it is really easy with computers and video.

But to go back to Rev I recommend this online job for anybody who has the ability to work with video and audio.

thank you for stopping by my site

  4. Nice to read about a legitimate online job opportunity in the sea of online scams. I haven’t heard of Rev before but it is a company I can recommend to someone looking for a transcriptionist/subtitle writer job.

I wonder what countries they allow applications from.

    1. Hi Shaun, yes Rev is a legit and good product but if you’re not used to doing the job it can take you some time at first to do it because everybody need a little experience of doing a job. And I sure that you can do it in every country.
      Thank’s
      LYne
